The reasons for obesity are multiple and complex. Efforts such as dieting and exercise programs are associated with a 95% failure rate.

Obesity is not a mental illness; there are factors (environmental, genetic) that cause obesity that may not be within your control. According to research, obesity is a chronic lifelong condition that is the result of consuming too many calories, not getting enough exercise, AND having a genetic pre-disposition for weight gain.

Weight loss surgery, when compared to other interventions, has provided the longest period of sustained weight loss with reduction and resolution of co-morbidities (other health related illnesses). To be considered for the surgery you must be at least 100 pounds over ideal body weight and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40.

DRMC’s Bariatric Program offers three surgery options for you.

• Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is one of the most frequently performed procedures for morbid obesity in the U.S. It restricts food intake and the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs. In addition to creating a smaller stomach pouch, the surgery changes the body's normal digestive process. As a result, food bypasses a large part of the stomach and part of the small intestine. Gastric bypass surgery studies have shown that gastric bypass patients typically lost 61.6% of their excess weight surgery. Many health problems (back pain, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and depression) improve or are resolved following surgery.
  
  
• The Gastric Reduction-Duodenal Switch (GR-DS) surgery is a highly effective procedure that eliminates many of the severe side effects associated with other forms of weight loss surgery. We are one of the few hospitals in the United States to offer this advanced procedure. Ours is a comprehensive program that includes extensive pre-operative education & counseling, specialized clinical staff, equipment, and facilities, and a structured aftercare program. Special arrangements can be made to assist patients and family members coming from outside the local area.
  
  
• The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is a simple yet advanced gastric banding system that helps you gradually lose and control your weight by reducing the amount of food that your stomach can hold at one time.
